Northam Platinum, Booysendal South Mine, South Africa

BACKFILL PLANT

Sustainable Slurry and Backfill Solutions completed the detailed design and engineering of a new hydraulic backfill plant which included the following:

  • Overland tailings transportation pipeline
  • Backfill preparation plant
  • Underground reticulation system
  • Underground backfill containment barricades and drainage system

Construction of the backfill plant was completed in September 2020 and the plant was successfully commissioned in October 2020.


Gold Fields, South Deep Mine, South Africa

BACKFILL PLANT DRY BINDER SYSTEM UPGRADE

Sustainable Slurry and Backfill Solutions completed the detail design of dry binder feed system upgrades for both the Full Plant Tailings (FPT) and the Cyclone Classified Tailings (CCT) backfill plants at South Deep Mine in South Africa. The FPT plant produces a paste backfill material while the CCT plant produces a cemented hydraulic backfill material which is distributed to the underground workings. Mine depths at South Deep will exceed 2700 m below surface.

The upgraded backfill plants will produce a combined throughput of 550 dry tonnes per hour. The detailed design was completed successfully in 2017 and included a cost estimate to 10% level of accuracy


Sibanye Gold, South Africa

TAILINGS PUMPING HYDRAULIC ASSESSMENT

Sustainable Slurry and Backfill Solutions completed an audit of the existing tailings pumping system and pipelines at Sibanye Gold’s Cooke operations in Carletonville, South Africa. The audit was undertaken to identify the cause of regular pipeline blockages and spillages experienced by the mine. The audit was completed and suitable recommendations were made to rectify the issues being experienced.
